Filtered Tractography: Validation on a Physical Phantom

چکیده
This note summarizes a technique that uses tractography to drive the local fiber model estimation. Existing techniques use independent estimation at each voxel so there is no running knowledge of confidence in the estimated model fit. We formulate fiber tracking as recursive estimation: at each step of tracing the fiber, the current estimate is guided by the previous. To do this we perform tractography within a filter framework and use a discrete mixture of Gaussian tensors to model the signal. Starting from a seed point, each fiber is traced to its termination using an unscented Kalman filter to simultaneously fit the local model to the signal and propagate in the most consistent direction. Despite the presence of noise and uncertainty, this provides a causal estimate of the local structure at each point along the fiber. We applied this technique to a phantom simulating several complex pathway interactions and highlight tracts passing through several prescribed seed positions.

Introduction Probabilistic tractography methods have been developed as an alternative to deterministic algorithms due to their ability to handle the uncertainty of fibre orientations. However, deterministic tractography have several advantages over probabilistic tractography for some applications such as neurosurgery. Visualization of the deterministic streamline trajectories is similar to the ...

Diffusion Tensor MRI (DT-MRI) is a relatively new imaging technique that measures anisotropic diffusion of molecules in biological tissue [1, 2]. This diffusion anisotropy reflects the presence of spatially oriented structures and therefore allows to study in vivo and non-invasively the architecture of axonal fibers in the central nervous system. Several methods have been developed to reconstru...

Introduction Diffusion-weighted imaging has become an established technique to infer the micro-structure of the brain. Its more popular application, fiber tractography, is still the only possibility to infer in vivo the structural connectivity of the brain. Despite the plethora of available tractography algorithms in the literature, it is still almost impossible to validate them or the local mo...

We propose a method for estimating axonal fiber connectivity pathways (cerebral connectivity fibers) from Multi-Tensor Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MTD-MRI). Our method uses multiple local orientation information provided by MTD-MRI for leading stochastic walks of particles. We perform stochastic walks on particles with mass which introduce inertia and gravitational forces that result ...

Image-based tractography of white matter (WM) fiber bundles in the brain using diffusion weighted MRI (DW-MRI) has become a useful tool in basic and clinical neuroscience. However, proper tracking is challenging due to the anatomical complexity of fiber pathways, the coarse resolution of clinically applicable whole-brain in vivo imaging techniques, and the difficulties associated with verificat...
